Bicycles are a crucial part of everyone’s childhood. Every kid rides a bike at least once in their lifetime. From a tricycle to a two-wheeler we all grow up learning to ride a vehicle. A bicycle is like the first vehicle that we have for going from one place to another. For some, these habits grow with them and become a significant part of their daily life. 

Bicycles are not just a plaything for the kids. Many adults also prefer using bicycles as a mode of their daily commute. Riding a bicycle has numerous benefits and some of them are listed as follows:-

  1. Bicycles are low maintenance and the cheapest means of travel. They do not require any fuel for their operation and the overall renovation and maintenance cost is significantly low. 
  2. Bicycles do not require any fuel consumption so they do not generate any pollution. These are eco-friendly and also save a lot of human effort for traveling.
  3. Bicycling is a healthy exercise that can keep us fit. People who use bicycles to cover long distances have better stamina and subsequently a healthy heart.
  4. Bicycles are very light and considerably safer to use. They are not susceptible to accidents as compared to other means of transportation. 

In present times, pollution has become a major concern of the word. An increase in the number of transport and automobiles is not only causing harm to the environment but also increases traffic congestion. People tend to use their vehicles for even covering short distances. If a major part of these cars is replaced by bicycles, the problem of traffic congestion and pollution can be subsidized to a great extent.

There are several vital rules that are needed to be kept into consideration before taking your bicycles on the road. Here are six of them:-

  • PROTECT YOUR HEAD

Our head is one of the most sensitive and critical parts of the body and any injury in this particular area can be life-threatening. Therefore, make sure that you wear a helmet and other safety gear before going out on your bicycle. Wear knee caps and biking gloves as well. Protective eye-wear can also be used to safeguard your eyes from the wind and the dust which can hamper with your visibility. A sturdy helmet with a belted fixture is essential for all cycling enthusiasts. Even if your kids are riding a bicycle at home, wearing the safety gear can help them build their habits.

  • OBEY THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS

Traffic signals are mandated to ensure the safety provisions on the road and prevent accidents. If you are bicycling on the road, make sure that you drive on the biker’s lane only. Follow the traffic signals and do not cause trouble for the pedestrians. Bicycles are much slower than automobiles and scooters. Therefore, do not ride in the middle of the road. Respect other’s concerns and give way to the other vehicles.

  • SEE AND BE SEEN

Getting a horn on your bicycle can also be very helpful. Be extremely careful while riding your bicycle on the main road. Look out for all other vehicles and be alert and direction conscious. Also, make sure that the other drivers are able to see you. Wear neon or bright colored clothes to increase your visibility.

  • WATCH OUT FOR ROAD HAZARDS

Constructions are pervasive on the roads and other places. Make sure that you be alert and look out for all the signs of hazards present in the streets. Speed bumps on the road can also be dangerous at times. Hence, make sure that you slow down your speed before going over the speed bumps. Additionally, learn about the various road signs so that you are able to understand them and safeguard yourself facing any problems.

  • AVOID RIDING AT NIGHT

For bikers, riding at night can be very dangerous. The visibility is extremely low, and the glare from the other vehicle’s light can cause several problems. Prevent yourself from riding at night at all costs. Attach a torch or a light on your bike for an evening ride. 

  • USE HAND SIGNALS

Before crossing the road or turning into other directions, make sure that you use proper hand signals. Educate yourself about the vital signs that can be used with the help of the hands to send a message to the other drivers.

    Bicycle riding is fun, healthy, and a great way to be independent. But it is important to remember that a bicycle is not a toy; it s a vehicle! Be cool follow some basic safety tips when you ride. Adjust Your Bicycle to Fit. Stand over your bicycle. There should be 1 to 2 inches between you and the top tube (bar) if using a road bike and 3 to 4 inches if a mountain bicycle. The seat should be level front to back. The seat height should be adjusted to allow a slight bend at the knee when the leg is fully extended. The handlebar height should be at the same level with the seat.
