The spine of IB Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

The International Baccalaureate programme is one of the most sought after programmes in the educational industry. The CAS system plays a very integral role in the IB programme carried out by many schools. CAS stands for (C)reativity, (A)ctivity and (S)ervice, which acts as a core component of the IB system of education. CAS enables students to sneak out from the bookish world and explore and analyze things outside the classroom and carry out practical experiments and strengthen their observational skills, through a plethora of co-curricular activities.

The CAS system encourages students to be a part of other miscellaneous activities and not just being a bookworm. The creative aspect includes the exploration of original ideas that lets students innovate ideas and produce noteworthy performances. A student has to have a healthy lifestyle through physical activities. The aspect of “Service” encourages a student to have a collaborative approach in accomplishing projects and special tasks through teamwork and productive discussion.

CAS also encourages students to develop interests on a particular topic and conduct a comprehensive, collaborative project to deepen their understanding of that very topic. It also acts as an aid to discover new hobbies and work on them. CAS not only ensures students to discover their passion but also helps them work harder to turn passion into profession.

How CAS encourages classroom activities

The traditional educational system entails a theoretical approach to deal with various concepts; however, modern education showcases the importance of experiential learning, i.e., a practical approach to learning. Belief isn’t justified by thinking, talking or writing; you should act to justify your thoughts.

CAS gives students a tangible way of thinking which, in turn, helps them actually take action after learning the concepts. For example, CAS not only teaches geography lessons and focuses on climatic change and its effect on livelihood, but also urges students to take a step forward to find an effective remedy. If “Reuse, Recycle, Reduce, refuse” is being taught as a part of the curriculum, CAS plays the role of implementing it practically as in, switching off lights and fan for a particular time span to conserve energy. This creative way of learning ensures students to engage directly with their mentors to learn concepts and apply them in their daily life activities to create a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

The notion of CAS is crystal clear. Either enhance your talents or burst the bubble to try something new. Testimonials claim that a lot of students have benefitted from the CAS programme. They have learned to love their work because that’s the only way to keep going. If you do not like and enjoy your profession, it is pointless to pursue the same. Briefly, CAS channelizes the personality of the student and creates a strong base for holistic learning.

Mission and vision of CAS

Being a core constituent of the International Baccalaureate programme, CAS imparts awareness, an appropriate set of skills, mindfulness, and freedom to pursue goals, creativity, health and wealth to all its students. Starting from school curriculum to developing interest on new things by stepping out of comfort zone, CAS does it all. Philanthropic contributions such as fundraising activities are also conducted to sow the seed of empathy and concern among youth. As long as students do it with passion and dedication, CAS will be their spine.
